UHF solutions for tracking surgical instruments & hospital equipment

New production facility for RFID Pod manufacture

The science-based innovators at Spa Track Medical Limited, well known globally for R&D focused on surgical instrument tracking, announced today the opening of their new UK RFID pod production facility.

Spa Track is now able to produce its own unique range of RFID pods in three sizes, all of which have tracking sensors encased within a hard-wearing, bio-compatible material that can withstand harsh sterilisation environments, as well as demanding surgical lifecycles. The Pods have a unique mounting that enables laser welding directly onto surgical instruments providing 100% confidence in their reliability.

Surgical instrument tracking is now a high priority for most healthcare providers as risks from blood-born infections are now recognised as a major problem. There is a need to trace the history of each and every instrument to be able to recall specific instruments that are believed to have been exposed to infections such as CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease) which cannot be removed through normal cleaning processes. Existing bar code based systems are not suitable for modern data management demands.

Spa Track solutions are designed to solve global healthcare problems, improve patient safety and provide excellent return on investment for hospitals and the Spa Track has invested heavily in the worldwide protection of its intellectual property.

The company’s RFID based surgical instrument tracking pods, combined with Spa Track software and the company’s new table-top rotary scanner means baskets of instruments can now be accurately scanned in 12 seconds in a theatre or sterilisation environment. Being able to identify each individual instrument so quickly and accurately delivers many cost savings, productivity gains and important benefits in terms of improved patient safety.
